描摹与想象:《阿拉比》与《相片》中的东方意象

摘要:

“东方意象”是以东方为特定环境展开的美学概念。通过观察、感受与表现,不同主体将自身对东方的认知具象化。《阿拉比》和《相片》中,詹姆斯·乔伊斯和冰心基于自身社会背景与价值观对东方意象进行差异化解读,通过西方主人公的视角将东方构建为异域之地。《阿拉比》中,东方“乌托邦”充斥帝国主义垄断下的商业化气息,女性形象某种程度上被物化为一种象征;而《相片》中,东方被浪漫化描绘,女性温婉形象受到东方社会环境的影响。事实上,这种从西方视角将东方描述为介于虚构与真实之间异质实体的单一化构建仍在一定程度上偏离事实。东方研究应基于东方丰富的文化传统和多元的社会面貌,突破西方建构的“他者化”范式,重塑东方形象的主体性和独立性。

Abstract:

“Oriental image” is an aesthetic concept based on the specific environment of the East. Through observation, feeling and expression, different subjects concertize their understanding of the East. In “Araby” and “Photo”, James Joyce and Bing Xin have different interpretations of the oriental image based on their own social backgrounds and values, and construct the East as an exotic land through the perspective of the western protagonists. In “Araby”, oriental “utopia” is commercialized under imperialist monopoly, and female image is materialized as a symbol to some extent, while in “Photo”, the East is romanticized and gentle female image is influenced by the oriental social environment. In fact, this monolithic depiction of the East as a heterogeneous entity between fiction and fact from the western perspective partly deviates from the truth. Scholars' oriental study should be based on the rich cultural traditions and diverse social features of the East, so as to break through “the other” paradigm constructed by the West, and reshape oriental subjectivity and independence.
